Cruise Ship Drug Arrest
Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines

Grandeur of the Seas - February 23, 2011

Two people have been the latest big time drug dealers arrested aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines' ships. On February 23, 2011, Grandeur Of The Seas was docked at Montego Bay, Jamaica, when 73 pounds (33 kilos) of cocaine was seized. That would seem like a pretty large cache of illegal drugs to be found on a cruise ship. Yet, when police came back around another 15 kilos of cocaine was found in the cabin of another crew member. The total cache of cocaine was estimated to be valued on the street at $100 million.

The first cache of cocaine, approximately 20 pounds was said to be found strapped to passenger, Ricardo Chin's body. Then, a search of the cabin found the balance of the cocaine in a suitcase.

Grandeur Of The Seas has just came from Cartagena, Colombia. It's surprising the cruise ship even calls at that port. More surprising was the crew member Sandip Surwade went overboard during this voyage. His case is here.

Of the last 8 drug busts Cruise Bruise has reported on, 6 were aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines' ships, including all three this month.

Yesterday, members of the Trans-National Crime and Narcotics Division and the Customs Enforcement Unit seized approximately $15 million worth of compressed marijuana at the Kingston, Jamaica Container Terminal.

The Customs Department says about 20 bags of compressed marijuana, weighing over a thousand pounds were seized in the drug bust. The marijuana had been loaded on a container ship headed for Trinidad.

Last week in Trinidad, $8.4 million in pure cocaine and $4.85 million in marijuana — in the Arima and Barataria areas was seized.

In the first raid, officers from Port-of-Spain CID and Task Force crashed a drug-smuggling air conditioning export business where air condition units were being filled with packets of pure cocaine and shipped to Jamaica.

Five persons, including a Jamaican national, 30; an Arima businessman, 44; a 28-year-old ramp attendant, employed with Caribbean Airlines who lives in El Dorado, an Arima man, 40, and a 25-year-old Arima woman, were arrested.
